The rapid pace of globalization, which cuts across geographical and political boundaries, has a clear impact on universally recognized human rights. However, the issues emerging as a consequence have to be dealt with in the context of the international legal framework, which remains firmly centred on the nation-state. This volume undertakes an examination of complex connections between globalization, international law, and human rights. The essays in the book analyse the patterns of state responses to both traditional and emerging notions of certain categories of the human rights paradigm. Several important contemporary issues, such as corporate human rights obligations, the interface between free trade and right to culture, the implications of human rights to water for international investment law, the response to terrorism in the context of human rights, and the linkage between human rights and good governance have been explored. Through its assessment of a wide range of issues confronting diverse societies in both the North and the South, the volume also highlights the need for aligning national policies with the rule of law and human rights imperatives.
